Mom guilt is a complex cocktail of regret, worry and FOMO that afflicts most—if not all—moms at some point or another, and even being the world’s greatest tennis player doesn’t let you off the hook from those awful feelings. Yep, even the great Serena Williams has to deal with mom guilt just like everyone else.
In a recent Instagram post, Serena shared how, even though it’s been almost a year since she and her husband welcomed little Olympia into the world, the past week got her in a postpartum funk. “Mostly, I felt like I was not a good mom,” she wrote in the caption.
A lot of emotions can surface for moms postpartum, and finding ways to navigate them can be difficult. (Some of these emotions may be related to postpartum depression, but that’s not always the case.) Here’s where Serena reveals her not-so-secret secret: communication.
Yep, they say it takes a village to raise a kid, but that village is also necessary to fight off the loneliness that parenthood can sometimes bring about. Simply talking to those around you about what you’re feeling can have a positive impact on your state of mind. Luckily, Serena has an amazing support system that she can turn to when times get tough.
How I stopped the mom guilt“Talking things through with my mom, my sisters, my friends let me know that my feelings are totally normal,” she wrote. “It’s totally normal to feel like I’m not doing enough for my baby.” We hear you, Serena. It IS totally normal to feel the way you’re feeling—even if you’re doing everything right—and we know you’ll get through it and continue slaying motherhood.
She closed out her post with a reminder to all moms that we’re all in this together: “If you are having a rough day or week—it’s ok—I am, too!!!
